How is AI Changing Search and What Do I Need to Do?

Search is no longer just a list of blue links. AI Overviews appear on a large share of Google results, AI Mode offers conversational exploration, and tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answer questions directly. Users increasingly get what they need without clicking through to a website.

This shift is already measurable. Studies show that when an AI summary is present, traditional organic click-through rates drop substantially—sometimes by roughly half for top-ranking pages. Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result only about 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when one did not. Many sessions now end on the results page itself.

Google Business Profile is the Yellow Pages

Before Google, a lot of local business started with a thick yellow book. You looked up a category, scanned the listings, and called whoever stood out. In the Cincinnati market, the prize spot was the back cover. It sat face-up on kitchen counters and office desks, and it was not cheap. From experience selling in that era, the back cover ran about $110,000 a month in a midsize market of roughly two to three million people. That ad is free now. The Yellow Pages today is your Google Business Profile.

Content Strategy Is the SSL Certificate of the AI Era

Search is no longer just about matching keywords. People are asking full questions and expecting direct, useful answers—whether they type into Google or talk to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews. The engines that surface those answers reward websites that consistently publish clear, helpful, well-structured content. Sites that stay silent are becoming harder to find.

Can I Pay Google To Get Reviews?

Google does not allow paid reviews.  For instance, you cannot directly pay a client to leave a review without being in violation of Google’s policies.  Additionally, you cannot request reviews with incentives (i.e. the first 100 people to leave a review are eligible for a giveaway, etc.).  You can, however, incentivize your staff to get reviews from clients, vendors, etc.

How Do I Get Google Reviews?

The easy answer to getting reviews is to ask for them ; however, we get busy and forget to do that.  A better approach is to build ‘asking’ into your sales process.  If you are a traditional retailer, asking at the point of purchase is a good idea ; a home remodeler – ask at project completion, appliance store – ask after the delivery, etc.  The best time to ask for a review is when you feel your customer will be the happiest (and most willing to take time to offer a positive review).   Here are some other pointers to help get positive reviews for your organization:
